Fine Lines of Inspiration...
These wise words have been collected over many years from various sources. Clearly, the authorship of many is undisputed, however there are just as many others where the origin is a mystery; at least to me. To give attribution to some and not to others would tend to confuse, lead to error and perhaps to suggest discrimination. I have therefore chosen to attribute none of them to any particular person.
I offer my gratitude and admiration to all who have unwittingly contributed to this collection. There is no index and there has been no attempt to group like with like. You will gain most by simply browsing.
Should any of these be deemed as private or copyright please advise and the item of concern will be removed immediately.

Sometimes when you're feeling important,
Sometimes when your ego's in bloom,
Sometimes when you take it for granted

Sometimes when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions
And see how they humble your soul:
466. Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to the wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that's remaining
Is a measure of how you'll be missed.
You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop and you'll find in no time
It looks quite the same as before.
The moral of this quaint example
Is do just the best that you can.

There's no indispensable man.

468. SIMPLE vs. REAL
Anyone can stand by you when you are right,
but a Friend will stand by you even when you are wrong...
A simple friend identifies himself when he calls,
a real friend doesn't have to...
A simple friend opens a conversation with a full news bulletin on his life,
a real friend says, "What's new with you?"...
A simple friend thinks the problems you whine about are recent,
a real friend says, "you've been whining about the same thing for 14 years,
get off your backside and do something about it."...
A simple friend has never seen you cry,
a real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears...
A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
a real friend has their phone numbers in his address book...
A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party,
a real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean...
A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed,
a real friend asks you why you took so long to call...
A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems,
a real friend seeks to help you with your problems...
A simple friend wonders about your romantic history,
a real friend could blackmail you with it...
A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest,
a real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself...
A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument,
a real friend knows that it's not a friendship until after you've had a fight...
A simple friend expects you to always be there for them,
a real friend expects to always be there for you! "
469. SLOW DANCE
Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down; Don't dance so fast
Time is short; The music won't last
Do you run through each day on the fly
When you ask "How are you?" do you hear the reply?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores running through your head?
You'd better slow down; Don't dance so fast
Time is short; The music won't last
Ever told your child, We'll do it tomorrow
And in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, Let a good friendship die
'Cause you never had time to call and say "Hi"?
You'd better slow down; Don't dance so fast
Time is short; The music won't last
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift.... Thrown away...
Life is not a race. Do take it slower
Hear the music before the song is over.
470. FRIENDS:
Don’t cry over anyone who won't cry over you.
Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.
You can only go as far as you push and actions speak louder than words.
The hardest thing to do is watch the one you love, love somebody else.
Don’t let the past hold you back, you're missing the good stuff.
Life is short. If you don't look around once in a while you might miss it.
A best friend is like a four leaf clover, HARD TO FIND and LUCKY TO HAVE.
Some people make the world special just by being in it.
Best friends are the siblings God forgot to give us.
When it hurts to look back, and you're scared to look ahead, you can look beside you and your best friend will be there.
True friendship never ends. Friends are forever.
Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.
Don’t frown. You never know who is falling in love with your smile.
What do you do when the only person who can make you stop crying is the person who made you cry?
Everything is okay in the end. If it's not okay, then it's not the end.
Most people walk in and out of your life, but only friend’s leave footprints in your heart.
Remember, every minute spent angry is sixty seconds of happiness wasted.
"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
471. IT'S DIFFICULT:
To believe when others are doubting.
To work when others are dreaming.
To care when others are neglecting.
To forgive when others are condemning.
To forget when others are judging.
To smile when others are complaining.
To praise when others are criticizing.
To love when others are resenting.
To save when others are spending.
To conserve when others are wasting.
To listen when others are talking.
To build when others are destroying.
To sing when others are sighing.
To pray when others are cursing.
To persist when others are quitting.
472. FOCUS ON:
What is, rather than what isn't
What can, rather than what can't
What will, rather than what won't
What does, rather than what doesn't
What has, rather than what hasn't
The kind of leader you are tomorrow, begins in your mind today.
473. THE MAN IN THE GLASS:
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself
And see what THAT man has to say.
For it isn't your Father or Mother or Wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may think you a straight-shootin' chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear to the end.
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life
And get pats on your back as you pass,
But the final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.
474. He had a year:
He had a year to do it in...
He had a year to do it in!
So brushed the thought away.
A chap with half his energy
Might do it in a day.
A year! ‘'Twas too ridiculous
As every one should find.
However, he would get it done
And have it off his mind.
But not today. A few months hence
Would suit him better still.
Meanwhile a far less irksome job
Might occupy his skill.
He would not let the matter pass
Entirely from him, no:
And doubtless he might take it up
In say a month or so.
He had six months to do it in!
For six long months had flown.
Well, why should that alarm a chap
With vigor like his own?
The job, when once embarked upon;
Would soon be rattled through.
However, he would think of it,
In say a week or two.
He had three months to do it in!
‘Oh brother!’ was his cry:
‘The think hangs on me like a weight
Each day that passes by.
Let’s see: three months? Ah, that’s enough
But just to clear the doubt
I’ll make arrangements for a start
Before the month is out.’
He had a week to do it in!
And care was in his glance:
‘It’s hard,’ he cried, ‘that flight of time
Won’t give a chap a chance.’
He still delayed: the swift week passed.
As weeks will ever run,
And, though a year was given him,
The task was still undone.
475. DONT QUIT:
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit -
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a person turns about,
When they might have won, had they stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
476. Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When they might have captured the victor's cup;
And they learned too late when the night came down;
How close they were to the victor's crown.
477. Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.
478. SUCCESS:
If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't,
If you like to win, but you think you can't,
It is almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost,
For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a person's will,
It's all in a state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, You are,
You've got to think high to rise,
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster person,
But sooner or later the person who wins
Is the person who thinks they can!
479. FRIENDS:
The old man turned to me and asked,
"How many friends have you?"
Why 10 or 20 friends have I
And named off just a few....
He rose quite slow with effort
And sadly shook his head
A lucky child are you
To have so many friends he said
But think of what you're saying
There is so much you do not know
A friend is not just someone
To whom you say "hello"
A friend's a tender shoulder
On which to softly cry,
A well to pour your troubles down
And raise your spirits high
A friend's a hand to pull you up
From darkness and despair
When all your other so called "friends"
Have helped to put you there.
A true friend is an ally
Who can't be moved or bought
A voice to keep your name alive
When others have forgot
But most of all a friend's a heart
A strong and sturdy wall
For from the hearts of friends
There comes the greatest love of all!
So think of what I've spoken
For every word is true
And answer once again my child
How many friends have you?
And then he stood and faced me
Awaiting my reply
Soft and sad I answered
"If lucky I have one."
481. FOCUS ON:
What is, rather than what isn't
What can, rather than what can't
What will, rather than what won't
What does, rather than what doesn't
What has, rather than what hasn't
The kind of leader you are tomorrow, begins in your mind today.
482. The Value of a Smile:
It costs nothing, but creates much.
It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.
It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.
None are so rich they can get along without it, and those who are poor become richer for it's benefits.
It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business and is the countersign for friends.
It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad and nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is always given away.
During that last-minute rush of Supermarket Shopping, should some of our sales team be to tired to give you a smile, may we ask you to leave one of yours?
For nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none to give.
483. THINGS WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM A DOG....
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them
Run, romp and play daily
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm
Be loyal
Never pretend to be something you are not
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride
Allow the experience of the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience
Let others know when they've invaded your territory
Take naps and stretch before rising
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently
Thrive on attention and let people touch you
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do
On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout...run right back and make friends
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk
484. A LESSON FROM GEESE ON LEADERSHIP
**As each bird flaps its wings by flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds 71% flying range than if each bird flew alone.
LESSON 1 - People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
**Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the "lifting power" of the bird immediately in front.
LESSON 2 - If we have as much sense as a goose we will step into formation with those who are headed where we want to go.
**When a lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position.
LESSON 3 - It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership, independent with each other.
** The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
LESSON 4 - We need to make sure that our honking from behind is encouraging .....not something else.
** When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of the formation to follow and protect. They stay until the goose is able to fly again or dies.
LESSON 5 - If we have as much sense as the geese, we'll stand by each other in the same manner.
485. CRACKED POTS:A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was shamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After 2 yrs of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said.
The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."
Moral: Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots, but it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are, and look for the good in them. Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.
Remember to appreciate all the different people in your life - including all your crackpot friends!!!!!
486. HUGS:
There's something in a simple hug
That always warms the heart;
It welcomes us back home
And makes it easier to part.
A hug is a way to share the joy
And sad times we go through,
Or just a way for friends to say
They like you 'cause you're you.
Hugs are meant for anyone
For whom we really care,
From your grandma to your neighbor,
Or a cuddly teddy bear.
A hug is an amazing thing
It's just the perfect way
To show the love we're feeling
But can't find the words to say.
It's funny how a little hug
Makes everyone feel good;
In every place and language,
It's always understood.
And hugs don't need new equipment,
